DUBAI: The Michelin Guide — the restaurant industry’s most-respected guidebook — will launch its Dubai edition this month in partnership with Dubai Tourism. That has led some skeptics to speculate that the list will be filled with international headliners in tourist-friendly venues. But it’s not uncommon for Michelin to partner with tourism boards for its guides, and the company has stressed that “one star in Dubai equals one star in Paris.” Michelin inspectors visit venues multiple times, anonymously.

Giannino rogue chef tirade, Dubai’s restaurant scene comes of age
If this week’s high-profile spat between Dubai-based food blogger FooDiva and hot-headed Italian chef Andrea Brambilla has done one thing, it’s shown me how far Dubai’s restaurant scene has come in the past decade. When I started writing restaurant reviews in Dubai 13 years ago, my editor gave me strict instructions: “You can’t write a bad review. If you want to say something negative, say two positive things before it and two positive things after it. Always start and finish on a positive note. If the restaurant is so bad you can’t think of anything nice to say, don’t write anything at all.”
